Magestic Hails to SwordMaster! So far this pack of evil Swedes only have one MCD out, "Wraths of Time," but their full length debut is expected out before the end of the year. They play a slamming, hi-speed kind of black that is reminiscent of early Emperor material...there are fairly complex, melodic riffs and background keyboards filling out the sound, but the delivery is straightforward and totally aggressive, if not, well, BRUTAL. Happily they've gone against the black trend of breaking off in the middle of a fast/thrash section to include self-indulgent atmospherics, soprano vocals, or folk melodies (which are cool & interesting to a point)- so the overall listening experience is as exciting as cranking Deicide.

Whiplasher's lyrics are good too, especially on "Upon Blood and Ashes" when he screams about "skies bleeding bloody juices," "Pythonic powers," and "a wolf-hordes journey sworn since superlangsyne time". (? superlangsyne?)

"Wraths of Time" is truly a M of a CD, with only two full songs and a third "Preview" track for the upcoming release. It's shortness was disappointing, but I guess it served its purpose in making me psyched to hear more kingly music from the Masters of shiny steel implements of death.
